DMP Launches “ZIA™ SLAM” Software for Autonomous Mobility and Robotics Applications

Digital Media Professionals Inc. (Headquarters: Nakano-ku, Tokyo, President & COO: Tsuyoshi Osawa, hereinafter referred to as DMP) announces that it has launched “ZIA™ SLAM” (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping), a software product based on Visual SLAM technology that simultaneously estimates self-position and generates an environmental map using camera images and sensor information for the practical application of automatic driving and autonomous mobility of low-speed vehicles, drones, etc.

DMP has world-class GPGPU technology, advanced semiconductor development and acceleration technology, and a wealth of experience in developing AI algorithms for autonomous driving and safe driving support. In recent years, DMP has been accelerating the development of AI technology for automatic and autonomous driving in the field of low-speed vehicles such as agricultural equipment and automated guided vehicles for customers in the robotics field, including DMP’s business and capital partner Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd..

DMP’s “ZIA™ SLAM” software supports Visual SLAM technology, which recognizes three-dimensional space from sensors, and by integrating SLAM into the system, robots can be equipped with a machine eye. According to a report by MarketInsights, the global SLAM robotics market is expected to grow from $248.5 million in 2019 to $472.6 million by 2025 and cover a wide range of applications, including self-driving cars, cleaning robots, AGVs (Automatic Guided Vehicles), UGVs (Unmanned Ground Vehicles), planetary probes, submarines, drones, nursing care robots, security robots, and service robots.

“ZIA™ SLAM” developed by DMP uses a camera, which is less expensive than SLAM technology using LiDAR* and operates with high accuracy and speed, contributing to higher performance and lower cost for customers’ products. “ZIA™ SLAM” also supports ROS2, the latest version of Robot Operating System (ROS), a software platform for robotics applications, making it easy to integrate into customer systems. Furthermore, the versatile “ZIA™ SLAM” can be embedded in any platform including GPU, CPU, and FPGA. In particular, it supports the high-performance and energy-efficient NVIDIA® Jetson AGX Xavier™ as a reference platform, bringing the power of AI and edge computing to embedded applications in several industries including industrial, manufacturing, healthcare, agriculture, smart cities and more.

DMP will continue to expand its Visual SLAM business and contribute to the practical use and popularization of robots for various applications such as AGVs, UGVs, cleaning robots, and drones

“Autonomous robot applications require cost reduction for mass production and widespread use in addition to accuracy and safety. “ZIA™ SLAM” has the performance to meet these requirements and contribute to development and mass production for customers’ applications. We will continue to collaborate with NVIDIA to provide optimal solutions, including “ZIA™ SLAM”, to customers who are considering the development of automatic driving and autonomous mobile systems,” said Tsuyoshi Osawa, President & COO of DMP.

“Autonomous machines require high computing performance at the edge for real-time, multi-algorithm processing, which is why the Jetson AGX Xavier is the perfect platform to run ZIA SLAM. The combination of DMP’s advanced SLAM software and the Jetson edge AI platform will benefit developers and manufacturers deploying next-generation robotics products and applications,” said Mr. Masataka Osaki, Japan Country Manager and Vice President, Worldwide Field Operations of NVIDIA Corporation.
